The Art of Craftsmanship

The surface remembers the hand.

Zellige is glazed terracotta, cut into shape and set piece by piece. Look closely and every edge, pool of glaze and shift of tone records how it was made.

A Moroccan way of building with colour

For centuries, zellige has lined the fountains, courtyards and madrasa walls of Fez and other Moroccan cities. Its geometry did practical work: it brought light into shaded courtyards, stood up to water and daily use, and turned a wall into something worth looking at closely.

That is still why it is chosen today: it is a material made to be touched, cleaned and lived with.

Fig. 1 Glazed squares, each a slightly different shade, set with narrow joints.
    Glaze
Glaze settles unevenly as it fires: deeper at the edges, thinner across the face. Colour shifts from tile to tile, even within one batch.
    Edge
Each piece is cut by hand, so edges are slightly irregular and corners softened. Small chips where the glaze breaks belong to the material.
    Joint
Pieces are set close with narrow joints, so the wall reads as one continuous field of colour rather than a grid.
    Surface
The face is never perfectly flat. Gentle undulations break reflections into many small highlights instead of one glare.

    Light finds every difference.

A zellige wall changes through the day. Low sun picks out the cut edges, overcast light brings the tonal variation forward, and lamplight warms the glaze. A perfectly uniform tile has nothing for the light to catch.

    How zellige is made

    1. Shape Clay is soaked, kneaded and formed into flat tiles, then left to dry.
    2. Glaze and fire One face is glazed and the tiles are fired in a kiln.
    3. Cut Each tile is cut by hand into its final shape, with a bevelled edge so pieces sit tightly together.
    4. Assemble For geometric panels, pieces are laid face down in the pattern, then backed and lifted into place.
    5. Finish Joints are grouted and the surface cleaned, leaving one continuous field of glaze.

This describes traditional zellige making in general, not the practice of a particular workshop.

In the rooms we live in now

The same qualities suit contemporary rooms: a shower wall that holds the light, a backsplash with depth beside plain cabinetry, a single niche that rewards a closer look.
